PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Terrell C. Gladney Memorial Summer Academy began as a way to honor the life of Terrell Christoper Gladney (May 10, 2000 – March 10, 2008). In his short 7 years, he made it feel like 70 years for all those who had the pleasure of being around him. Best remembered for his infectious smile, Terrell had an amazingly old soul, and was extremely perceptive for a child his age. He saw the world through an optimistic lens, and the TCG Memorial Summer Academy (Originally the TCG Summer Basketball Academy) is a humble attempt to provide children an opportunity to see the world through such a lens, and give them a reason to smile.

The Academy is unique in that it provides a combination of physical conditioning with hands-on, interactive life and character skills workshops. Better yet, it’s FREE!!!!

We attract students of all ages (Pre-K to High School) from all over our region (and occasionally out-of-state, as well), including students from Sac City Unified, Natomas Unified, San Juan Unified, Elk Grove Unified, and even the Sacramento Diocese Catholic Schools! Our diversity allows students to develop new relationships, become more culturally competent and aware, and gain real-world experience in leadership and teamwork.

Having initially focused on basketball, the program has grown to heights beyond our wildest dreams.  The Academy now spans to include: full classroom workshops including student panelsguest speakers (Nate from Belle Cooledge Library, and other community partners), field trips (last year included a River Walk in conjunction with a conditioning session, visit to Kobasics Candies, Belle Cooledge Library private workshop and tour, overnight camping at River Bend Park), and end-of-the-year celebrations (G-Factor Game Truck, a Bounce House, and BBQ at R. Kelley Farm on the beautiful Sacramento River!). We seek each year to improve the program to further engage students – attracting dozens of new participants each year, and upping the ante to continually re-enroll our previous participants.
